The Mannheim Regional Court today dismissed a lawsuit filed by Motorola against Apple concerning what Motorola called a standards essential 3G/UMTS patent. The patent in question covered the "method and system for generating a complex pseudonoise sequence for processing a code division multiple access [CDMA] signal." The judge overseeing the lawsuit said that Motorola did not effectively argue its case, and ruled that Apple is not infringing on the patent. Motorola and Apple have traded courtroom wins and losses regarding smartphone patents. Patent litigation is rampant across the smartphone industry, with lawsuits pending in dozens of countries.
