T-Mobile plans to lay off 5,000 employees over the next five weeks. The number amounts to about 7% of staff and will not affect retail nor customer care positions. The reductions will be in "primarily duplicative" corporate and "back-office" jobs. Five years ago when T-Mobile sought FCC permission to merge with Sprint, the companies promised 3,000 – 11,000 additional positions instead of layoffs.
