The FCC's Auction 101 of licenses to operate in the 28 GHz radio frequency band has reached its conclusion. The Commission successfully auctioned 2,965 licenses, selling for a grand total of $702,572,410. The auction continued despite the ongoing government shutdown because the administration of such auctions is funded by auction proceeds. Auction 101 is tightly linked with Auction 102, for 24 GHz spectrum. Both frequency bands are expected to be used for mobile 5G service. Auction 102 will proceed imminently now that Auction 101 is over. The list of which companies won which licenses is secret until both auctions have concluded.
