T-Mobile today rolled out FamilyMode, a new service that gives parents more control over how their kids use smartphones and other connected devices. The service relies on a what T-Mobile calls the FamilyMode Home Base, an in-home box that connects to WiFi and exerts control over device access to the internet. With the accompanying app, parents can manage usage time, set limits, filter apps and content, set bedtime hours, create geo-fences, and always access real-time location. T-Mobile says the service works with phones, tablets, gaming consoles, laptops, TVs, and other WiFi-connected devices. The Family Mode Home Base costs $20 and the service is $10 per month. It will be available starting June 29.
