Instagram has expanded the functionality of its mobile web site to include basic photo uploads. Previously, the web version of Instagram was limited to a more passive series of features such as browsing, searching, and liking. Moving forward, users can upload images from their smartphone to the mobile web site. The mobile site still doesn't support video uploads, nor does it support filters, direct messages, or stories. "Instagram.com is a web experience optimized for mobile phones. It’s designed to help people have a fuller experience on Instagram no matter what device or network they are on," said Instagram in a statement provided to TechCrunch. The desktop web site for Instagram is still limited to a passive experience. Instagram hopes the change will encourage those who may not want to download the mobile app to join the photo-centric social network.
