Tanzania, east Africa's second-biggest economy, posted a 0.9 percent annual increase in the number of mobile phone subscribers in 2016 to 40.17 million, its telecoms industry regulator said on Tuesday. Mobile phone use has surged in Tanzania and other African countries over the past decade, helped by the launch of cheaper smartphones. The number of Internet users rose to 19.86 million last year from 17.26 million in 2015, the state-run Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) said in a report.
