Microsoft today charted a new course for its Skype platform as realized on mobile devices, tablets, laptops, and PCs. Late last year, Microsoft announced its intent to offer a universal app for PCs and tablets, with separate apps targeting Windows 10 smartphones. After digesting feedback over the last few months, Microsoft has had a change of heart and will offer a universal app for all platforms. This will let people invested in the Windows ecosystem enjoy the same experience across different form factors. However, the company still intends to offer the separate mobile apps for calling, messaging, and video because it says phone users often prefer task-based apps. Microsoft will release the universal Skype app for Windows 10 PCs soon, with a version for phones to follow later.
