An Alaska Air flight was forced to make an emergency landing in Buffalo, N.Y., today after a flight attendant’s credit card machine created smoke in the galley. According to Alaska Air spokesperson Nancy Trott, the device “was not on fire” but flight attendants did use a fire extinguisher to put out the smoke. The credit card reader was equipped with a small lithium ion battery, similar to the type of battery that powers a watch or cell phone, according to the airline.
