The Wireless Power Consortium today updated the specification behind its Qi wireless charging standard. The latest Qi spec makes a major leap forward in terms of the power it can deliver to devices wirelessly. Specifically, the Qi specification now makes it possible to deliver 15 watts of power to mobile phones that support wireless fast charging. This is already possible using wired chargers, but the WPC claims its advancement marks the first time such wattage can be applied wirelessly. This new Qi fast-charging feature will reduce the amount of time it takes devices to reach a full charge when placed on Qi-compatible charging pads. The new spec, which is compatible with older versions of the Qi standard, is available to WPC members beginning today. The spec will be made public at a later date.
