OK, I was given this old laptop. Everything works good except there is no sound and none of the USB ports function. I can charge a phone using the cable but windows does not detect anything plugged in. I've updated all the drivers and BIOS.
Any suggestions
Looks like the USB ports are dead. It was suggested I reformat but that didn't help. As for the sound, can you hear it through the headphones?
EDIT: On second thought, try reformating and starting new. It might work.

Did you ever get it figured out? I would do a complete reload of an OS. Or try Puppy Linux first actually that should at least tell you if your usb's are truly dead. Also make sure those items didn't get hosed physically ie crossed pins in the usb.
Ya I've got ubuntu running but no USB, I'm thinking it's the motherboard. So I am ordering a USB pcmia card see if that works. But for now it's used for surfing the internet.
Ok yeah. I have an old zv5000 with no HDD I use puppy on.
Well the fact that you can charge anything on a USB, the usb itself is sending power so its not burnt. Have you checked the device manager and checked what drivers you might be missing.
The usb usually fixes itself once you install the chipset of the process, Knowing Dell it has an Intel processor. Have you checked the setting on the BIOS, they may be turned off.
