Installing rom to Pre

I am attempting to flash my first Pre...need to know where to start.
Is it REQUIRED that i get Virtual Box and load linux to it to load the rom?
Also, do i need to do any steps as far as palm profile activation bypass if i load qinray's rom?

Qinray's ROM bypass' activation. If you power off, then hold volume up key, then connect cable it boots into a "bootloader" mode for USB connection. Then run the rom program. Follow the guide posted in this section. It's very well written and works well.
