I know what it stands for
But I don't understand how it works
I read certain prepaid companies rent off the network towers.
But other than that I have no clue

Think of an MVNO as a reseller allowed to use it's own brand.
    example
AIrvoice buys access to the AT&T system not just the towers at a reduced wholesale rate, they in tern resale that service they purchase to consumers at a retail rate, they usually handle all the customer service, billing, etc.
Some MVNO's also start off using an MVNE and others also function as an MVNE and MVNO.
