Retail giant Amazon is following the success of its Kindle Fire tablets with an Android-powered console tagged with a sub-$300 price and targeting a 2014 release. The box is intended to take on traditional consoles from Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo and will be set up to offer the now standard cocktail of music, movies, and TV streaming alongside a selection of video games, according to sources speaking to VG247. At the same time, it'd have to prove its value as compared with the Nintendo Wii U ($249) and the Android-powered Ouya ($99), which is due a hardware refresh at some point later this year. On the other hand, Amazon already has excellent retail and distribution, with 200 million active customers, 10 million of whom are signed up to the Amazon Prime subscription service.
