AT&T today announced a new program that will allow companies that provide mobile web services to cover the costs of delivering their apps to consumers. AT&T has long expressed interest in the idea. It short, it will let app developers and content providers foot the bill for their customers’ data use. Data used by these sponsored apps will not count against consumers' monthly data allotment. Instead, the companies will pay AT&T for their content to be delivered to consumers. According to AT&T, sponsored data will not be treated differently or given priority access over other data. AT&T did not announce any companies that have yet signed up for sponsored data, but said it expects the service to be popular with app developers looking to improve uptake of their apps.
