The number of tablets sold in 2014 is expected to be roughly equivalent to the number of laptops and desktops combined, according to the latest forecast from Canalys. The research firm estimates that around 285 million tablets will be sold during the coming year (an increase of 46%) compared to 290 million desktop or laptop PCs (a 6% drop). Canalys also predicts that Apple and Samsung will continue to dominate the tablet market in the coming year. Around 65 percent of tablets sold in 2014 will be equipped with the Android OS, while Windows 8 and RT – at the other end of the spectrum – will have a market share of less than 5 percent, still up from 2 percent in 2012.
