Canonical today announced Ubuntu 13.10, a new version of its Linux operating system that offers the same user experience on smartphones and desktop computers. Canonical says the operating system now includes a number of core mobile apps, such as a browser, calendar, clock, weather, and calculator. In addition to the operating system, Canonical released a full SDK for developers that includes templates, extensions, themes, and other tools to create applications. Canonical says the SDK can be used to write one app that runs on smartphones, tablets, and PCs. Ubuntu 13.10 and the associated developer tools are available for download from Canonical. Canonical is working with hardware manufacturers in the hope that it will launch a phone running Ubuntu next year.
