Samsung today announced the Exynos 5420 to its range of system-on-a-chip mobile processors. The 5420 is among the first to add a six-core ARM Mali-T628 GPU processor for improved 3D graphics. According to Samsung, the 5420 has twice the graphics processing power of its predecessor. It can handle 1080p HD video record and playback at 60 frames per second and can also push full HD video to Wi-Fi displays. The 5420 has eight application processor cores arranged in a big.LITTLE configuration. There are four ARM Cortex A15 cores clocked at 1.8GHz and four ARM Cortex A7 cores clocked at 1.3GHz. This allows the chip to maximize performance versus power efficiency. Samsung says it offers a 20% improvement in power needs compared to the previous generation chip. The Samsung Exynos Octa 5 5420 is currently sampling and will reach mass production by August.
