The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has tentatively declared an important Apple patent invalid. This particular patent, often referred to as the "Steve Jobs Patent," pertains to the rubber-banding effect that occurs in iOS when users attempt to scroll past the bottom of a given screen. This tentative action may be finalized in the future. The same patent was declared valid by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission earlier this year. This particular patent is important because the San Jose court found Samsung guilty of infringing on the patent in August, and used it in part to calculate the $1.05 billion fine against Samsung. If the patent is officially declared invalid, it could upend Apple's legal cases against Samsung.
