Apple indicated via its iTunes application today that its music-based social network, Ping, is no longer accepting new users and will shut down on September 30. A message about the closure greets Ping users when they attempt to use the service within iTunes. The social-sharing service, which was accessible from desktops as wellas iPhones and iPads, never quite took off. Now that iTunes offers Facebook and Twitter integration for social networking, it is no longer necessary.
