Google Chief Legal Officer David Drummond today stated in a blog post that Google will protect Android from what he calls "a hostile, organized campaign against Android by Microsoft, Oracle, Apple and other companies, waged through bogus patents." Google accuses Apple, Microsoft, and others of using patent litigation as a weapon to stifle Android's availability. Drummond continued, "Our competitors want to impose a 'tax' for these dubious patents that makes Android devices more expensive for consumers. They want to make it harder for manufacturers to sell Android devices." Google called the patent litigation "anti-competitive" and vowed to do what it can to fight it. It will start by seeking government oversight of recent patent auctions, as well as acquiring its own patents for protection. Nearly all the major manufacturers of smartphones are involved in patent litigation with one or more of its competitors.
