Samsung passed up a golden opportunity with the Galaxy Note 9 (https://www.pcworld.com/article/3296457/android/samsung-galaxy-note-9-hands-on.html). Just days earlier, Google officially launched Android 9 Pie (https://www.pcworld.com/article/3294787/android/android-9-pie-faq-features-tips.html), bringing a brand new way to navigate, smarter notifications, and indoor mapping with Wi-Fi RTT. The world’s most dominant mobile platform reinvented itself to stay ahead of the ever-changing smartphone landscape.
But you wouldn’t know it by looking at the Note 9. Samsung launched its new $1,000 phone with Android Oreo 8.1, an OS that’s technically newer but nearly indistinguishable from the one that’s running on the Galaxy S9 (https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwjer7XilOrcAhUpT98KHfFSAt4QFjAAegQIABAB&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.pcworld.com%2Farticle%2F3260 732%2Fandroid%2Fsamsung-galaxy-s9-review.html&usg=AOvVaw2U5iT20cabH_A2dxDOXuNs). And instead of making a statement to the Android community that it will not only make the best hardware but pair it with the best software, Samsung continued to treat Android as a necessary burden standing in the way of its vision.
