i just sent them an email asking if this cable will give a comport on a pc,i did find what looked to be the exact same cable but different company last week they were the makers of the cable, spoke with there tech dept. in length and he assured me that it was made to not give a com port per apples specs. in fact it had a chip in the front and the back, the one in the front was to allow low level communication, the one in the back was to limit it. i ask him to make me one that would allow only,he replied this is closely regulated and must be approve by apple to avoid a lawsuit and they would not do it...

anyway not sure if this is the same cable but looks the same. i will post the answer when they get back to me.

interesting, are you talking about the one made by redpark?

The thing about this one is in the description it says:
"Great for DIY projects ("peek and poke", data manipulation, modem applications, etc.)"

I would think things such as peek/poke require a com port

It doesnt make a comport, its a serial cable, it uses the comports serial already found on the computer. Serial cable is based on the the SERIAL port on the back, this serial port is usually assigned COM1 or COM2 most computers usually com with this hence the reason why you always have a COM1 and COM2 when you do a fresh install.

I dont know why your asking if it makes a serial port appear because thats not what this does it uses the serial port already installed on the computer, you hook it up to the correct serial port on the back of your comptuer and connect to either com1 or 2 if you never changed them.

2nd as far as i can tell this isnt what we need, this interfaces with the phone, but you have to have a application written on the phone that interfaces back. So again if no DIAG program intilizes no communications. You are more then welcome to try it and let me know though but that is why he has a program written for the iphone and one written for the computer, because you need to have one on the iphone to talk back.
