MediaTek today announced the Helio P25, a mobile processor for smartphones that boosts imaging and video capabilities. The P25 relies on a 16nm FinFET process and includes eight ARM Cortex A53 cores clocked at 2.5 GHz. MediaTek says the P25 is 25% more power efficient than the P20. The P25 is paired with an ARM Mali-T880 GPU clocked at 900 MHz, and boasts MediaTek's Imagiq 12-bit, dual image signal processor (ISP) technology. MediaTek claims the P25 and dual ISP can handle 24-megapixel single cameras or dual 13-megapixel cameras set in a color/mono configuration. This is typically put to use for capturing depth-of-field data to help generate bokeh and other effects. Moreover, the processor and ISP combo can allow smartphones to capture HDR video. Other features of the Helio P25 include support for 64QAM LTE-TDD for faster uploads and LPDDR4x RAM modules up to 6 GB for less-power-hungry multitasking. MediaTek expects the Helio P25 to ship in devices during the first quarter of the year.
