The leader of the wearables market-boasted the No. 1 free app in the App Store on December 25, which seems to indicate a bevy of device activations. The Fitbit app soared 20 spots to claim the No. 1 position in the Apple App Store’s top chart of free apps in the U.S. during Christmas afternoon, according to Quartz. Unsurprisingly, Fitbit has thrived in the fourth quarters of previous years. Last fourth quarter, the company sold about 5.3 million devices, more than the previous three quarters combined. Christmas Day was the first time its app was the top free Apple Store app. (Fitbit’s app was still the No. 1 free iOS app as of the publishing of this article.) Earlier this month, the International Data Corporation (IDC) released a report forecasting 214.6 million worldwide shipments of wearable device units in 2019. In 2015, the firm expects 80 million shipments of wearables. There has been plenty of talk about smartwatches killing off activity trackers like those manufactured by Fitbit, Jawbone, Garmin, and others. While those expectations are likely premature, IDC notes that smartwatches are and will remain the most popular category of wearable devices.
