The European Commission has opened two separate investigations into Qualcomm's business practices to determine if the chipmaker is violating antitrust regulations. The first investigation is targeting Qualcomm's alleged offer of financial incentives to companies that ordered chips only from Qualcomm. The second investigation is looking into Qualcomm's pricing, wherein the company severely undercuts competitors to force them out of the market. "We are launching these investigations because we want to be sure that high-tech suppliers can compete on the merits of their products," said European Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager. "Many customers use electronic devices, such as a mobile phone or a tablet, and we want to ensure that they ultimately get value for money." Qualcomm said it was disappointed to learn of the investigations, but said it is cooperating with the European Commission fully. Earlier this year, Qualcomm agreed to pay a $975 million fine to China and change its licensing fees to end a similar investigation. Qualcomm makes processors and modems for mobile phones and other devices.
