Facebook said it was inspired to create the service after an AMBER alert posted to Facebook by a user resulted in the recovery of an abducted child. According to Facebook, the alerts will appear on both the desktop and mobile devices, though it won't push notifications or trigger alarms on lock screens. Users will be able to share AMBER alerts, as well as access the details on the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children's web site. The AMBER alerts will be location-specific. The number of people alerted will depend on the size of the potential search area determined by the law enforcement agency involved. Facebook said some people may see a few AMBER alerts per year, while others won't see any at all.
