Intel today announced several new processors for Android smartphones and tablets. First is the Z3480 (codenamed Merrifield), an Atom-based 64-bit mobile processor. It is a 2.13GHz system-on-a-chip based on Intel's 22nm Silvermont architecture. The Z3480 also uses Intel's Integrated Sensor Solution, which manages sensor data and can be contextually aware even when the device is asleep. The Z3480 can be paired with Intel's XMM 7160 LTE platform for a CPU-baseband combo. Intel also offered a peek ahead at its next-generation LTE chips. The Moorefield chip will be a 64-bit processor with cores up to 2.3GHz. Moorefield will feature an enhanced GPU and support for faster memory. Intel expects to pair it with its forthcoming XMM 7260 LTE chip, which will support Category 6 LTE at peak downloads of 300Mbps. Intel said that more companies have committed to building devices with its processors, including Lenovo (smartphones and tablets), and Dell, Asus, and Foxconn (tablets).
