Thinking of giving your iPhone the old heave-ho and defecting to the Android Army this holiday season? Google chairman Eric Schmidt wants to help—and no, I'm not talking about the jaw-droppingly low $350 off-contract price of the high end Nexus 5 (http://www.techhive.com/article/2060496/nexus-5-review-wouldnt-be-as-sweet-without-kitkat.html). Over the weekend, Schmidt posted "Eric’s Guide: Converting to Android from iPhone (https://plus.google.com/+EricSchmidt/posts/JcfVoJhW2Kw)" on Google+.
More than just another marketing missive (though there is plenty of talk along the lines of, "80% of the world, in the latest surveys, agrees on Android"), Eric's Guide is a detailed, 900-plus word step-by-step guide on the nuts-and-bolts of transitioning from Apple's handset to a fresh new Android. Seriously: Schmidt talks about syncing photos with iTunes, shuffling contacts around, and even gets into details about swapping around SIM cards.
If you're jumping ship, Schmidt's post really is a great tutorial, painful self-promotional bits and all.
Why would anybody consider dumping their iPhone 5s (http://www.macworld.com/article/2049401/iphone-5s-review-tomorrows-technology-today.html) for an HTC One (http://www.techhive.com/article/2033315/review-htc-one-is-the-android-phone-to-beat.html) or Galaxy S4 (http://www.techhive.com/article/2036247/review-samsung-galaxy-s4-is-a-worthy-successor-but-not-revolutionary.html), you ask? Longtime Apple aficionado Andy Ihnatko tackled that very question (http://www.techhive.com/article/2030042/why-i-switched-from-iphone-to-android.html) for TechHive earlier this year, in a detailed, three-part series that covers the biggest upsides and downsides of making the switch. We won't leave you hanging at Schmidt's square one, though: TechHive can point you to the best widgets (http://www.techhive.com/article/259845/the-15-best-android-widgets.html) (one killer Android feature!), action games (http://www.techhive.com/article/2036516/the-best-action-games-for-android.html),-to-do apps (http://www.techhive.com/article/2036989/the-best-to-do-apps-on-android.html), app launchers (http://www.techhive.com/article/2048918/5-launcher-apps-to-give-your-android-phone-a-fresh-new-look.html) (another awesome Android exclusive!), mail apps (http://www.techhive.com/article/2047776/5-android-mail-apps-for-the-gmail-weary.html), and more in our chock-full Android section (http://www.techhive.com/category/android/).
