Good news amid the gloom: Lumia sales now outnumber BlackBerry sales

Investors sent Nokia shares sliding on Thursday after the vendor posted less-than-stellar results for the second quarter this year. Nokia narrowed its loss substantially in the second quarter to -$151 million, but handset sales plummeted 27% to 61.1 million units and average selling prices fell off a cliff. But amid all the gloom, Nokia’s global Lumia shipments climbed to a record 7.4 million units on the back of the Lumia 520, and an important milestone was achieved: Lumia shipments in the second quarter outnumbered BlackBerry smartphone shipments in BlackBerry’s most recent fiscal quarter, which totaled just 6.8 million units.
