Each week Ross Rubin (http://twitter.com/rossrubin) contributes Switched On (http://www.engadget.com/tag/switchedon?utm_source=Feed_Classic&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Engadget), a column about consumer technology.

But if having a fancy, even unprecedented, hinge is what defines a touch-optimized notebook, Acer is a bit late to the party.
Last October (http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/07/hail-to-the-hybrids/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Engadget), Switched On discussed the role that laptop-tablet hybrids -- namely convertibles and detachables -- would play in the differentiation of Windows 8 devices. Both types have seen their share of support. Detachables have included HP's Envy x2 (http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/14/hp-envy-x2-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Engadget), ASUS' Transformer-inspired VivoTab (http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/20/asus-vivotab-smart-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Engadget) and Microsoft's Surface (http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/05/microsoft-surface-pro-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Engadget). (Dell's XPS 10 (http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/30/dell-xps-10-xps-12-duo/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Engadget) is available only with Windows RT.)
