Apple has requested that Samsung pay it an additional $707 million in damages above the $1 billion already awarded to Apple over violated patents. Both Apple and Samsung submitted motions regarding the case this week. Apple said it arrived at this new amount by calculating how Samsung's early infringements led to successes with subsequent devices (variants of the Galaxy S and S II). U.S. District Court Judge Lucy Koh has the authority to triple the damages awarded by the jury. Further, Apple requested that a total of 26 Samsung devices be banned for sale in the U.S., even though many are no longer available. At the same time, Samsung filed a motion requesting that the $1 billion penalty be reduced to just $35 million. It believes the jury miscalculated the damages associated with the patent violations. Samsung also believes that the jury's decisions concerning Apple's patents were "unreasonable." Last, Samsung asked that the entire decision be vacated. It argues that the time constraints placed on the trial by Judge Koh severely curtailed its ability to plead its case.
